San Francisco is known for its rich and diverse cultural scene, the city is famous for its theatres, museums, festivals, art galleries, architectural style and much more.

San Francisco is home to many world-renowned museums, many smaller and specialized museums, and hundreds of art galleries, so there are many opportunities to get immersed in San Francisco's arts and culture scene. SoMa is home to important museums and art galleries, while Union Square is filled with theatres. In the Mission, the art is on the walls with colourful murals.

In addition to art museums and galleries, San Francisco is home to the world-renowned San Francisco Ballet Company which is one of the oldest continuing resident ballet companies in the United States; the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1911; and the San Francisco Opera, founded in 1923 and the second largest opera company in North America; other well-known musical ensembles founded in San Francisco include the Kronos Quartet.

The San Francisco Ballet Company and the San Francisco Opera perform at the War Memorial Opera House while the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra plays in Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall both halls are located at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center

San Francisco art museums are some of the best in the world, check out the exhibits in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; de Young Museum, Museum of Modern Art, the Exploratorium, Asian Art Museum and much more. The Legion of Honor, located in Lincoln Park, has also many interesting art exhibitions.

San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater is considered one of the country's leading regional theatres; it offers both classical and contemporary theatre productions that are held at the eponymous American Conservatory Theater. A lot of plays are performed at the traditional Curran, Golden Gate, Orpheum, Victoria and Herbst theatres. For fun performances go to Beach Blanket Babylon in North Beach, it is America's longest running musical revue; it has been running since 1974. San Francisco is also home to many popular and unique movie theatres, including The Castro, The Roxie, and the Red Vic Movie House.

San Francisco has been one of the world's rock capitals; it was the place of birth of the San Francisco Sound during the 1960s with bands such as The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin's band. Other bands which started their careers in San Francisco include Sly & the Family Stone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana, Journey, Steve Miller Band, Dead Kennedys, Metallica, Tiger Army, Faith No More, American Music Club, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

There is an annual San Francisco Blues Festival in late September; San Francisco is also home to the San Francisco Jazz Festival which is an annual three-week celebration jazz music produced by SFJAZZ
